Information for families

What should you provide as a host family?

An au pair is a single girl or boy aged between 17 and 27. She/He comes to UK to study English language while the au pair is living with English – speaking family. An au pair should be treated as a member of the family. You must understand that they come from a different culture, so you have to be understanding and patient as it might take time for them to get used to English language and way of life. So once your Au Pair arrives, you should prepare a list of duties and times you want the person to work. For example most Au Pairs are required to vacuum, dust, iron and keep the children's rooms clean and tidy. In the first few weeks you will find that your An Pair will understand English better written than spoken.

Your Au Pair should be made to feel part of the family and given every assistance to learn English and to attend language classes. In return for accommodation, meals and pocket money (from £50 per week) you will have help in the home for 5 hours per day – 5 days per week. This will include looking after the children, shopping, light household chores etc. In addition you will have a babysitter for 2 evenings per week that you do not need to drive home!

The advantage of an Au Pair is having someone on hand who is intelligent, well educated, good mannered and willing to help with flexible working hours. Your Au Pair may also hold an International Driving Licence so he/she can help with taking your children to school, nursery, play group and shopping trips. Living within a family environment will benefit your Au Pair’s language skills.

How long do the Au Pairs stay?

Au Pairs stay from one month to a maximum of two years. Some clients employ an Au Pair just for the summer holidays. British law states that Au Pairs are entitled to 4 weeks holiday per annum. We suggest that an Au Pair takes his/her first holiday after a minimum of three months with a family – at their convenience.
 

What accommodation do I need to provide?

All Au Pairs will need to be provided with their own private bedroom with an area to study and some form of entertainment – TV, stereo or similar. By providing this both parties will have the opportunity for privacy when it is required. In most cases an Au Pair will wish to attend an English Language class once or twice a week. This will be at a time designated to the Au Pair as “free time” or at times suitable to the family. Two free days each week should be given to your Au Pair to enable him/her to make new friends and to benefit from the cultural opportunities available in this country.

Eating arrangements

This is at the family’s discretion – although an Au Pair should be treated like a member of your family, and so eat with the family. The pocket money structure is based on the provision of both accommodation and meals.

Travel

The Au Pair is responsible for the cost of their transport to and from UK. When arriving to this country the family should meet the Au Pair at the airport/coach station so it is the family’s responsibility to arrange collection of Au Pairs.
